The name and logo acknowledge the ancient roots of yoga, convey how it can support us in a modern context, and illustrate the importance of community connection.
Time is a Gift
In our modern world, time is often the thing we lack most, yet one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. Taking time for yourself should not be a luxury. It should be valued as an essential tool for our self-care as it provides an opportunity for reflection, rest, creativity and improving self-knowledge. The exploration and practice of the ancient system of yoga — both on and off the mat — is a nourishing and mindful way to spend that gift of time.
“Kāla” Defined
In the ancient language of Sanskrit, the word “kāla” ( काल ) has many meanings, including fixed or right point of time, a space of time, time (general), the proper time or season.*
“Yoga Kāla” therefore signifies “time for yoga” and the name is intended to inspire you to slow down and honour yourself with time to breathe well, move well and be well. It’s about pausing from the pull of responsibility to and for others, and taking time for YOU.
Salute the Sun
Yoga Kāla began in south Ottawa, and we all know the sun shines stronger in the south!
But more than that, the logo’s sun represents these wonderful aspects of yoga:
vibrant energy of movement;
an anchor to help us juggle all that orbits around us;
a nourishing light that helps us evolve through the seasons of life; and
basking in the warmth of community.
The sun’s circular shape and its rays of varying sizes symbolize diverse people coming together in a community where everyone is welcome.
My sincerest hope is that when you take time practice with Yoga Kāla, you feel more connected to yourself and to community so you can shine more brightly!
